Gay or lesbian are always misrepresented, they don’t behave like this so why such stereotypes in movies. These little things are so besotted in our subconscious minds that whenever we think gays-a boys with very bright colors outfits, girly, talking while waving their hands in the air is always comes in your minds. If you noticed, whenever a gay character is featured in any Bollywood movies, it shown either as very feminine or sex hungry who always eve teases the straight character. Not in a stereotypical way that Bollywood is notorious for doing. This can only be changed when LGBTO culture is showcased in our country’s mainstream media. The mindset of most people especially senior citizens is not supportive of gays. Supporting such actions by the government is a must in order to stop homophobia, which still is a very serious issue. Shabnam Be-wa-fa, Rani Ko-he-noor is a few of many drag queens performing in India. Due to a very favorable review from the public, Kitty Su has also been opened in Mumbai and Bangalore as well. Peppermint, Willam, violet Chacki has been performing in the club since its opening. Kitty Su, India’s own gay club is known for drag performances from local as well as international drag queens. The Lalit group (chain of hotels) has opened a franchise of nightclub to support drag culture in India. Now, with the abolishment of section 377, the culture has been given an official green flag to flourish in India. In Kismat (1968) actor Vishwajeet is dressed as a woman while actress Babita is dressed as a Pathan. In a movie Half Ticket (1962) Kishore Kumar can be seen dressed a gypsy woman. In old Bollywood movies, there have been numerous instances where actors are dressed as a woman. Earlier, when art, the theatre was growing among the working class, women were not allowed to work so the female role was usually done by men in cross-dressing. There have been numerous texts, paintings that show them with the royals in their daily lives. Indian art, the sculpture is living proof that drag, LGBTQ, transgender have been a part of our culture since the old times. In India, the drug culture is not something new to us. The show has launched the career of many drag queens such as Sharon needles, Alyssa Edwards, Trixie Mattel, Violet Chachki, Vanjie Mateo, and many more. Thanks to RuPaul, one of the most famous drag queen in the world and his primetime Emmy award-winning show Rupaul’s drag show where a bunch of drag queens from different genres compete with one another to be the World’s drag superstar. In the last few years, drag performances are gaining a lot of momentum. Entertaining the people through that side is what drag performances are. It is an alter ego that allows a gay to be how he wants to live or how he feels. It can be quirk, funny, dark, or whatever you want it to be. It is how he perceives his inner feminine side. But for me, drag is a persona that a person (usually a gay person) develops inside of him. In layman language drag queens are a person usually a male in women’s clothing entertaining the masses through their lip-sync performance or a small skit. So, what is a drag? Where does it actually come from? Who are the ones who do drag? Are some of the many questions that come to mind? So, here I am going to show a world with a culture of clubs, legends, art, and theatre to you. With the huge popularity of RuPaul’s drag race, drag queens are slowly but surely are coming into mainstream entertainment media and people are now looking forward to drag performances. Over the past 5-6 years, the drag culture is on the rise.
